Catocala briseis is found across the boreal forest region of North America from the Pacific Northwest to Newfoundland, and also in the mid-western and northeastern United States. It has mottled forewings, sooty or gray, with a diffuse whitish band; the hindwings are orangy-red with black bands. The wingspan is 60-65 mm. It flies from April to September. The caterpillars feed on poplars, including the Trembling Aspen (Populus tremuloides), and willows (Salix spp.).
